New Beginnings is wrapping up summer with a lot of gratitude for how God pursues us and draws us closer to Him. We had so many opportunities to grow in our faith, learn more about God, worship Him, serve others, share our faith and enjoy some fun and fellowship too.

Face Painting

We were able to reach out to the community with face painting at the Brooklyn Flag Festival and raise funds for camp at the same time. We had such a great time doing this!

Summer Camps

Our kids and youth attended summer camp with Open Bible at the beautiful Hidden Acres Christian Camp in Dayton, Iowa. Each person left closer to God than they came. One of the youth from our church accepted Christ at camp! We are so thrilled to be able to send our kids to an Open Bible camp with wonderful activities, and amazing worship times and speakers.

Baptism Sunday

Two of our kids decided to get baptized this year! We enjoyed a fun night the Saturday before with a potluck, games, and a variety of shenanigans.

Our Sunday service was held at Lake Iowa. We gathered on the beach to share testimonies, and following prayer, we witnessed baptisms.

Missions

This summer a college student from our church, Karissa, shared about a week she spent ministering to the people of Dillingham, Alaska. She went with a team from her campus ministry group. God used this group as they held Vacation Bible School and blessed the kids and their families through testimonies and prayer.

We are closing out the summer with a visit from Nicole, a full-time missionary to Lebanon. She will be sharing about her time ministering to refugees from Syria. Nicole will be treating us to tea with mint and a glimpse of Middle Eastern culture as we see what it’s like to step into a typical Syrian home. Please join us Wednesday night, August 28th!

Join us for an interactive missions event Wed, Aug. 28, 6:30 PM New Beginnings Church, Brooklyn, Iowa

Things We Aren’t Saying

This summer, our pastors ministered to all of us on Sundays and beyond, sometimes in very specific ways. Whether they met to pray with us, let us cry on their shoulder, or invited us over for games and pie galore, we’re really blessed by Josh and Tracey Gerard!

We all are eager to continue in the faith and reach out to those we meet with God’s love. We look forward to everything God has for us in the seasons to come.

I’d venture a guess that roughly everyone in Brooklyn, Iowa not only knows Josh Gerard, but they also know he’s a man of the theater. This year, our pastor put on a second Christmas play that he wrote, and it was another smashing success. Between the laughs, the audience was reminded of the gospel and the real reason for the season.

Sharing his faith and entertaining at the same time is a passion Pastor Josh has had for a long time. With this year’s play, It’s a Wonderful Christmas Story, he told the tale of a dad who is visited by an angel after showing some confusion about the meaning of Christmas. A mashup of several classic holiday movies ensues. Josh was happy to direct a fantastic group, many of which included those from our church family.

An article about Josh and his many roles in life was published in The Poweshiek County CR. We’d love for you to read this article, which includes a powerful testimony of God’s guidance. You can see Josh’s response in the photos below.

We believe he’s going through the three stages of fame: shock, joy, and finally, acceptance.

If you missed the play, watch the New Beginnings Facebook page over the Christmas holiday for a recording that will be available for three days only. In the future, we hope to offer Josh’s faith-based plays as downloadable PDFs in a shop on the website, so stay tuned! It’s our hope that many other churches and theaters can put on his productions and share a fun, inspirational time for their community.

We had a great time painting faces during Brooklyn’s Flag Festival on June 10! It was a gorgeous day, there were tons of wonderful activities for families and kids, and the whole community seemed to have a wonderful time. We had five painters who decorated 119 faces.

Other activities at Brooklyn Flag Festival included the parade, a classic car show downtown, entertainment at the Michael J Manatt Community Center, and tons of things to do at the park, like bounce houses, foam dart target shooting, and more! There was plenty of tasty food around, too.

We were in a great location in the small shelter at Landes Park. There was a constant flow of kids getting their faces painted!

Karissa, Addi, and Lorelai

Face painters included Karissa Heishman, Addi Day, Lorelai Gerard, Ryan Emerson, and Laura Emerson. Tracey Gerard coordinated the event and counted each person coming in. We were happy to bring extra cheer to this already fun local event!

We raised $600 in funds for kids and youth camps this summer. We thank God for His provision! We’ll see you next year at the Flag Festival.

We’re thrilled to have the wonderful opportunity of offering Christian summer camps to our children and youth. Open Bible Central, our denomination and region, partners with a wonderful Christian campground in Iowa to give kids a fun-filled time to grow closer to Jesus.

Hidden Acres is a camp center with loads of fun activities and modern buildings. Campers enjoy things like a lake, waterslide and “blob,” indoor pool and hot tub, game room, gym, hiking paths, climbing tower, and more. Hidden Acres manages a large hospitality staff and volunteer nurses to make sure time at camp is safe, fun, and spiritually nurturing. It is the largest camp in the state of Iowa.

Parents, this could be a key time in the spiritual life of your child. Many kids choose to commit his or her life to Christ for the first time at camp. Most will deepen their faith and make lasting friendships. Open Bible has created wonderful programs for your children to help them understand God’s love for them.

Kids, get ready for an awesome summer!
