James 1: Doulos
“If you couldn’t pay a debt, you could work it off for a time, and then you would be set free. There were times when that slave would say, ‘Serving you is better than what I was doing before. I want to be here. I don’t want to go back to where I was, I want to continue to be in this household, serving you.’ If the master agreed, the master would put a mark on him, and that person would be his slave, his doulos, for life. This is how James defines his relationship with Jesus.”
