The Trials of Job: A Comedy – Laughter Amidst Darkness

Can a story known for its darkness also be a source of humor and hope? The community is invited to explore this question at the upcoming performances of The Trials of Job: A Comedy, running April 24–26th. This unique production is Pastor Josh’s fifth play to be staged at the Brooklyn Opera House! (We’re so proud.) It combines a modern comedic setting with a deep reverence for the biblical text, offering answers to timeless questions about faith and God’s goodness.

A Modern Twist on an Ancient Story

We often think of the story of Job as one of the darkest chapters in the Bible. While this play honors the weight of that story, it finds a brilliant way to bring out the humor despite the tragedy. Written and directed by Pastor Josh Gerard of New Beginnings Church, the script is a modern take featuring Job as a businessman whose “beef industry” and “bowl-a-rama” empire are under threat. You’ll even meet a very proper British manny named Fred who has a penchant for Gatorade. (This is a Josh Gerard production, after all, so don’t expect things to be too normal.)

Why a Comedy?

You might wonder if a comedy is the right fit for such a serious book of the Bible. Pastor Josh addressed this in a recent interview:

“It’s the opposite [of making fun of it]. I care deeply about this book of the Bible. I want to honor Job’s story, and the message that God sends Job and all of us in it. There are moments we play it for laughs, but we still honor the message.”

Who Should Attend?

This play is truly for everyone. It is family-friendly and packed with Scripture, making it a wonderful way to engage with the Word in an entertaining format. As Josh says, you don’t have to be a theologian to enjoy it, but the hope is that everyone leaves with a deeper understanding of God’s goodness, even in the midst of life’s “rollercoaster” moments.
