While the Hebrew title of the book, Bamidbar, means “In the Wilderness,” the Greek translation gives us “Numbers”—referencing the detailed censuses of the Israelite tribes. Why the detailed accounting of 603,550 fighting men? Because God was building an army to fulfill His 400-year-old promise to Abraham and to serve His judgment.
